AirTel hikes its prepaid tariff once again

AirTel, the country’s leading Telecom Operator, has once again hiked Pre-paid tariffs for its customers across the country. Tough it is not a direct hike affecting tariffs but now the offering/STV would give you either less benefit or would come for shorter duration. For example, from now on, the Rs. 98 Priced Monthly Internet Pack would give you just 1GB of data from 2GB earlier. Also the Roaming Bonus STV that offer reduced calling rates on Roaming now comes for 180 days, the same used to come for 1 Year earlier. In July this year also AirTel had hiked 20% tariffs which led other operators to follow the suit. It would be interesting to see how other Telecom Operators react to this now.

The Indian Telecom Sector has been facing acute competition since mid 2009 when new operator started rolling out their services thereby reducing the overall tariff to lowest possible points. AirTel was (mid 2009) & is still market leader but its profits are going south with each passing quarter/year. This is affecting AirTel, which is now not just an Indian Brand but a company that has presence across continents.
